Last week I was asked to appear on ABC4 Utah to discuss my storytelling portraits. This was an amazing feat for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is that I'm a creative and not exactly a professional public speaker whose comfortable jumping on live tv at a moments notice. ABC 4 Utah actually reached out to me to see if I'd be available the next morning to talk about my portraits. Eeeek!
Obviously I said YES! I scrambled to send the files they needed and picked out two favorite portrait examples to bring up on stage with me. While in the green room, I met a family who would take the stage before me. Sadly it was a story about a local drowning in a nearby lake and the heroic efforts of two students and EMT to save a complete stranger from the bottom of the lake. An experience, they said, will forever change them. It was at that moment when things clicked and I realized this big building and unfamiliar place was not all that scary after all. I now saw the tv crew and hosts as part of a similar tribe, my tribe. Each person showing up everyday to help tell the important stories within the community. This same community is filled with families who look to me to celebrate the people most important to them and their stories on the walls in their homes. This was exactly where I was supposed to be. This was my Oprah Winfrey-like AHA moment :)
